Maggie Alphonsi MBE

England Rugby World Cup winner, media commentator, author and inspirational speaker

Inspirational speaker Maggie Alphonsi is one of the most influential names in rugby. A Rugby World Cup winner and seven-time Six Nations champion, she represented England 74 times before retiring from international rugby in 2014. That same year, she helped secure England’s first World Cup win in 20 years and was later inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

Background

Since then, Maggie has forged a successful career in the media. She broke new ground as the first former female player to commentate on men’s international rugby with ITV during the 2015 World Cup. Maggie continues to work with ITV Sport and writes as a columnist for The Telegraph. In 2023, she published her autobiography Winning the Fight, shortlisted for the Sports Book Awards Autobiography of the Year. Following on in 2025, she co-authored Ultimate Rugby Superstars with Matt Oldfield.

Away from broadcasting, Maggie became the first England Women’s player elected to the Rugby Football Union Council.  Here she plays a key role in shaping the game’s future, particularly around diversity and inclusion.
