Inspirational Speaker, James Ketchell, Triumphant Return From Latest Global Challenge

We are delighted to announce that our speaker, British adventurer and Guinness World Record holder James Ketchell, has just returned to the UK following the successful completion of his latest global challenge.

On 13 June 2026, James sailed into Gosport to complete an extraordinary third circumnavigation of the globe by sea, having previously flown a gyrocopter around the world in 2019 and cycled around the world in 2013. He becomes the first person to achieve the triple feat of circumnavigating the globe by land, by air and by sea. This remarkable achievement adds to an already impressive list of accomplishments including summiting Mount Everest and rowing solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Following his return, we caught up with James to reflect on his journey, the lessons learned and the message he shares with audiences around the world.

What was the most challenging aspect of sailing around the world?

There were many challenges and setbacks, when flying or cycling around the world, you can pause and take a break for a day to rest or avoid bad weather when necessary. When sailing across oceans, thousands of miles from help, you are committed with no option to ‘pause’ and must deal with whatever comes your way.

What have you learned from your experiences of sailing, cycling and flying around the world?

  1. Never be afraid to try something new – Often, the fear of a new challenge is never as bad as you think it’s going to be. Do not let fear stop you from taking on a new challenge. Research, good preparation and a level of self belief will stand you in very good stead.
  • Mindset and attitude are probably the most important elements of success. Having a positive, “can-do” attitude will carry you much further than you think. Learning to stay calm and control your emotions in stressful situations is something that is very important.
  • I have encountered a lot of people from different backgrounds and cultures, ultimately, we are all the same. In my experience, 99% of the people on this planet are fundamentally kind, caring and supportive.

You spoke in a school in almost every country you passed through. How do you connect with young people?

Being young was very difficult for me; I really struggled at school, with no confidence and very little ambition. I never dreamt that I would accomplish the things I have done and so, I can empathise with young people and their struggles.

I talk a lot about kindness and the importance of treating people in a way you would like to be treated. I also discuss the value of understanding that you cannot always control what happens in life, but you can control how you respond. It’s vital to take ownership of everything you do and never blame other people when things don’t go your way.

Learning to understand that disappointment is a part of life is important, as is resilience and responding in a positive way. Opportunities can often present themselves following a disappointment or setback — There is frequently a silver lining to be found later, even if you can’t see it at the time.
